Tracking movements of decapod crustaceans: a review of a half-century of telemetry-based studies

Decapod crustaceans are ecologically and economically important invertebrates but vulnerable to anthropogenic pressures climate change. Understanding their spatial ecology is essential for management conservation, with telemetry emerging as a useful tool quantify space-use movements. Here, we synthesized the use of study decapods among articles published from 1971 2019 (n = 102 studies), by taxonomic group species, location, objectives, number animals tagged tag recovery rate, types (and trends) used, IUCN conservation status. These studies revealed insight into behaviours roles across habitats geographic regions. The most common species were crayfish lobsters (41%, Astacidea), these also had highest individuals per (mean 149 individuals). Most (86%) conducted in northern hemisphere. Acoustic tags commonly used equipment (66% studies) first employed 1971, followed radio-telemetry (mid-1990s), passive integrated transponders (mid-2000s), data storage (late 2000s). Almost half (48%) focused on that status Least Concern, perhaps reflecting an applied science focus commercial interest rather than importance. positive allometric relationship between body length movement rate (exponent 0.86) demonstrates type broader ecological combining can provide. Tracking decapod movements will likely become increasingly managing fisheries, protecting sensitive understanding invasion biology.
